Bulloo Overflow, an overflow wetland (from the Bulloo River) providing a wide range of habitats and a major drought refuge for waterbirds , including Stictonetta naevosa (freckled duck) population Mallee Remnants, are now rare in eastern Australia, and those remaining comprise refuges for mallee-dependent organisms including ANZECC listed and other rare and threatened species. Paroo Wetlands, massive complex of wetlands providing a wide range of habitats and a major drought refuge for waterbirds (inc freckled duck) . Channels and swamps are densley vegetated with Mueglenbeckia cunninghamii, eucalypts and acacias. |

400 plant taxa, 51 reptile species, 34 mammal species and 180 bird species. Most diverse subregion within the SSD bioregion. The ostrocod crustacean Diacypris sp. A is restricted to Lake Eyre South (Williams 1990) The Lake Eyre dragon Ctenophorus maculosus is restricted to Lake Eyre and surrounding salt lakes. Lake Eyre - The terminus of one of the largest endorheic drainage basins in the world, and a major breeding area for waterbirds during periods of inundation. (Morton et al., 1995) |
