Biodiversity Assessment - Nullarbor

Natural Values

Table: The natural values within each subregion.
Natural Values Description
Carlisle (NUL1)
Diversity

Cave systems support very rich communities of troglobites and troglophiles.

Stygofauna are generally endemic to individual systems as they have no means of dispersal and have evolved independently.

95% of their total extent within Nullarbor 1 - Low open woodland; mulga & Allocasuarina cristata

95% of their total extent within Nullarbor 1 - Succulent steppe with open low woodland; mulga & sheoak

Sminthopsis psammophila

The Nullarbor is the worlds largest Karst system. The Caves systems of the Nullarbor Plains are considered to be of World importance.

Troglobites

Dasycercus cristicauda

Cinclosoma cinnamomeum

Acanthiza iredalei iredalei

Nullarbor Bioregion has been considered for nomination as a World Heritage site, indicating its significance and uniqueness.

Wetlands of the Nullarbor region

Polytelis alexandrae

Two vertebrate species that are also known to use the Caves are the bat, Chalinolobus morio, and the Nullarbor population of the masked owl, Tyto novaehollandiae.

Troglobites and troglophiles of the follwing groups - Crustaceans, centipedes, cockroachs, carabid beetles, orthopterans, pseudoscorpions and spiders.

Nullarbor Caves qualify as refugia and are considered highly significant as they provide refuge for many evolutionarily relictual species.

Nullabor Plain (NUL2)
Diversity

Nullarbor bioregion is considered to be relatively species poor ecosystem. Knowledge is incomplete however.

Stygofauna associated with underground aquifers are generally endemic to individual systems as they have no means of dispersal and have evolved independently.

Beards Vegetation types 214, 448, 449, 461, 1241 (98%) and 4641 are all endemic to NUL2 (100%).
