Summary
Dryland salinity has been recognised in South Australia to be an important issue which presents unique challenges to land managers, policy makers and regulators. Estimates of areas affected have increased from 55 000 ha in 1982 to almost 393 000 ha in 1993 as a result of increased awareness and better recognition of the problem, as well as the actual expansion of salinisation. This Audit project has allowed the first mapping of dryland salinity to be carried out with consistent methodologies and guidelines. The areas of agricultural land affected are considered to be secondary salinity and do not include the estimated 84 000 ha of primary (pre-European) salinity.
