Compilation of a Database of Socioeconomic Indicators for the Rangelands

Gerald Haberkorn, Colin MacGregor, Shannon Kelson and Con Charalambou

The socioeconomic indicators useful to monitoring were identified at the individual, business and community levels. Three of the individual and business indicators have been identified as having a meaningful relationship, either positive or negative, with sustainable resource management practices. These are age of the property owner/manager, the existence of a property management plan, and the availability of off-farm employment income. Monitoring these key indicators will enable us to better understand likely adoption of sustainable property management practices in different areas, and examine the success or otherwise of programs designed to encourage uptake of these practices.

Most community level indicators provide useful information on sociodemographic and socioeconomic conditions in the rangelands; however, only two indicators should be used for regular monitoring: age-dependency ratio, and youth migration. Subject to further review, refined conceptualisation and empirical testing, concepts such as social capital and regional diversification may also yield good contextual information and prove useful for regular monitoring of socioeconomic conditions in the rangelands.

This report makes 6 recommendations about future data collections and information management systems to improve our understanding of how sociodemographic, economic, behavioural and institutional issues and processes impact on natural resource management in the rangelands.
