Intensity of Land Use

The aims of the project were to produce:
- a database of Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) stock (sheep and cattle) numbers for the rangelands of Australia from 1956/7 to current; and
- a series of maps illustrating grazing pressure (sheep, cattle, feral animals, macropods) for the rangelands of Australia from the 1950s to current.
-
As a result of very limited historical data on macropods and feral animals, semi-quantitative estimates of historical numbers were produced based on climate and simulated pasture growth. These estimates are considered to be indicative only, but do highlight the potential for spatial climate and simulated pasture growth to be used for analyses such as this. It was not expected that the project would yield results of scientific or cultural interest, beyond the maps and data themselves, unless integrated with other data sets.
